Popularised by the film, Dirty Harry, the 44 Magnum is a lengthened 44 Special with the extra case capacity to increase the volume for propellant expansion and produce a round that is powerful enough for most types of hunting. The 44 Magnum benefits from a smaller diameter than the 45 Colt in the same size revolver frame, resulting in thicker cylinder and barrel walls which are able to take the pressure better. The 44 Magnum has a powerful recoil that makes it unsuitable as a police revolver, but the power of the cartridge has led to the manufacture of many sporting rifles chambered for the round. The inert round is fitted with a semi-jacketed soft point head, one of many types of expanding soft nose bullets that would have increased the damaged caused by this powerful round.
